Tip

Do not add water. Adding water to NaOH & KOH will cause splattering. When diluting, always add NaOH & KOH beads slowly to water. Always mix lye in a well-ventilated area or even outdoors.

1st Aid To-Dos

If Lye ever gets into your eyes or onto your skin, here is what you should do IMMEDIATELY:

Eyes – Immediately flush eyes for 30 mins with water then get immediate doctor’s attention.
Skin – Immediately flush skin with lots of water for 15 mins. Get medical attention.
Inhalation – Get lots of fresh air. Seek medical attention.
Ingestion – Drink large quantity of water. Do not induce vomit. Seek immediate medical attention.

Storage

• Always keep Lye in the original bottle with the label attached.
• Do not store Lye among food.
• Do not keep in damp, humid areas.
• Always keep Lye locked in a cupboard and out of reach from children and guests.

  2. In the event that you have employees working for you, we suggest that you develop an approved safety program for all products your employees will be handling.

  3. POISON:  KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN AND PETS.  Ingestion of lye can cause death.

  4. DANGER:  Avoid getting lye in contact with your skin, eyes, or any other body part.  Be sure to wear protective clothing, gloves, a mask, and protective eyewear when working with lye. Inhalation of lye/water solution can be harmful to your lungs.

  5. When working with lye, NEVER ADD WATER TO LYE!  It can create a dangerous lye volcano.  Lye should be slowly added to water, and allowed to dissolve.
