How to Use Allantoin in Skin Care

Allantoin is slightly soluble in water up to 0.5%, and is very soluble in alcohols. Before adding to water, heat the water to at least 65°C (150°F).

It is insoluble in oils and nonpolar solvents (these are solvents that dissolve oils and greases—think of diethyl ether or benzene). Allantoin is stable in the pH range 3-8 and to 80°C (176°F) prolonged heating.

Typical usage rates are 0.1 – 0.5%, but may be increased up to 2%.

Allantoin helps in the synthesis of collagen. Collagen is a fibrous protein that holds the skin cells together. Think of it like glue holding the skin cells. Collagen levels decrease as you age, making the skin sag.

What Ingredients You Can Combine & Not Combine?

Allantoin works well with silicone and other emollients when used in scar creams. You can also combine it with retinol (anti-aging ingredient). Do not combine allantoin with exfoliants like alpha and beta hydroxy acids as this combination can trigger allergic reactions or skin irritation.”

Side Effects Of Allantoin

Allantoin does not have any side effects. It is non-toxic, safe and suited for all skin types. Even sensitive skin types can opt for allantoin due to its calming effect on the skin. Refrain from using it in its rawest form – comfrey leaves, as it may cause some skin reactions.

How to Work with It:

Blend it thoroughly it in the cool-down phase (below 50°C)—this is so it doesn’t dissolve at higher temperatures and re-crystallize as the mixture cools, creating uncomfortable shards.

Storage & Shelf Life:

Stored somewhere cool, dark, and dry, allantoin should last two years. It is hygroscopic (it will absorb moisture from the air), so you might want to consider double-bagging it if you live somewhere humid.
