Diatomaceous earth (DE) offers an alternative method for detoxing your body, one that is cheap, simple, and effective.  DE’s naturally absorbent and abrasive nature makes it an ideal internal cleaner. Here are 5 everyday uses for Food grade diatomaceous earth…..

1. GUT HEALTH, DETOXIFICATION & PARASITES

DE, when taken internally on a regular basis, can serve to make your digestive system much ‘cleaner’ and healthier.

As it detoxifies and cleanses your digestive tract it also provides you an infusion of essential minerals such as calcium, magnesium, iron and zinc as well as silica.

Mix 1 teaspoon of DE into a glass of water, stir vigorously and drink on an empty stomach, preferably, first thing in the morning at least one hour before eating, otherwise two-three hours after eating.

Drink an additional glass of water immediately after you’ve consumed the mix and continue to stay hydrated throughout the day.

Handy Note: The powder will not completely dissolve in the water but it will distribute evenly if you stir it rapidly so that you easily drink the liquid quickly.  Since it won’t dissolve, drink as soon as you’ve finished stirring to minimize the amount of powder settling to the bottom of the glass. It’s normal to see a small amount of gritty residue or sediment left behind in the glass once consumed.

Follow this method off and on for a two-three weeks at a time, or periodically for a number of consecutive days, to maximize the ongoing detoxification benefits.

2. SKINCARE

By penetrating the pores, Diatomaceous Earth effectively sweeps the dirt residue and dead skin cells, allowing your skin to detoxify and breathe better.

The mild abrasive quality of DE makes it an excellent scrub and exfoliant for the skin. Despite this slight abrasive feature, its particles are small enough that they do not tend to cause irritation or trigger skin allergies.

Thanks to its fine nature you can use it as a natural face mask and gentle facial exfoliant.

Mix a small amount of DE with distilled water, you can also add a little bit of aloe vera and or raw honey into a paste. Gently rub and smooth all over your face. Leave for 15 – 20 minutes before rinsing off. To maximize the exfoliating benefits wipe off with a warm washcloth using small circular motions.

Note: Avoid contact with the eyes or broken skin.

3. HAIR CARE

Thanks to its highly concentrated silica, in addition to taking it internally, you can also apply it externally in order to help strengthen your hair, repair damage and improve the health of your scalp.

Add a small amount to your natural shampoo and wash your hair as normal.

You can also make a ‘hair mask’ by mixing D.E. with coconut oil, then lather it through your hair, leave it to sit for about an hour and then rinse out with fresh water.

4. TEETH

Thanks to its slightly abrasive nature, DE will help to give your teeth an extra good clean and help remove stains.

Sprinkle a small amount on to your natural toothpaste and brush your teeth as normal before rinsing with water.

5. PEST CONTROL

In addition to killing parasites, Diatomaceous Earth’s crystalline structure pierces the bodies of many small insects causing them to eventually dehydrate and die. Thanks to its non-chemical and non-toxic nature, it’s a safe and natural alternative to many other commercial pest control ‘sprays’ which often contain harmful chemicals similar to pesticides.

BED BUGS

Sprinkle DE on your bed as well as any other area you believe bed bugs may be present. Do this every night for about a month to completely kill not just the adults but also possible eggs and babies.

FLEAS

Sprinkle DE all around the house, especially on carpet, rugs, furniture and beds, paces where fleas are most likely to reside. Let it sit for 3 days before vacuuming it out thoroughly. 

You can also try applying DE directly on your pets. Just sprinkle and brush it in to the fur of cats and dogs until it penetrates their scalp. 

Re-apply and repeat the process for 30 days to ensure that the hatchlings are killed off. 

OTHER PESTS

DE can also be sprinkled around the home and in the garden to help control:

• Earwigs
• Cockroaches
• Ticks
• Spiders
• Other insect pests

You can use a hand duster or similar to get it into cracks and crevices or wherever you may have infestations.
