How to Yoni Steam
NOTE: PLEASE READ & NOTE DISCAIMER BELOW
How do I do the Yoni Steam?
- In a medium covered pot, pour 8 cups of water (preferably purified water).
- Place 1/4 cup dried herbs into the water. Bring water to a soft boil for 5 minutes.
- Turn off the heat, leave the lid on, and steep for another 5 minutes with the lid on.
- Wave your hand over the herbal water to make sure it is not too hot.
- Place the pot inside the toilet bowl (wide-rimmed stainless steel or glass mixing bowl)
- Remove your underwear and sit on the seat above the steaming water.
- Drape a large cozy blanket around your waist down to the floor making sure no steam escapes. also, a cozy pair of socks – all to keep the warmth within!
- Sit under the steam for 20 minutes.
You might want to consider giving your toilet a good scrub, burning a little sage to purify your sacred space or burn some incense and candles.
Playing some meditation music and reading a good book or writing about your experience in a diary in a good way to absorb the experience.
Go inward during this journey, meditate, read and journal. Start your ritual off with a positive affirmation and intention.
Allow yourself to BE during this time. Whatever comes up for you, let it release.
If a toilet for steaming is not your thing…
Try our custom made Chair (only available in January 2021) or stool with a hole in the center
Use and Electric burner, if desired a Gown or cloak, and create your own sacred space any where you would like.
Steam Stool
The 35cm stool is tall enough that you can put an electric burner safely underneath to keep the water warm for steams up to 30 minutes long.
Electric Burner
An electric burner will keep the heat going longer so you can steam up to 30 minutes.
Warning, long steams are not recommended if you have a cycle shorter than 26 days, if you’re prone to infection, or hot flashes.
Otherwise, doing a longer steam can be very therapeutic and is great for long cycles or when there is a lot of old residue.
Gown or Cloak
You can certainly use a gown or blanket to put over your lap. Some people call this cloaking.
The only other caution here is to do what’s comfortable. Don’t overheat yourself, that’s not the point of this. You should be comfortable.
And if you’re using a burner be cautious with the fabric.
Quality is Important
Whichever set up you choose, do not ever use plastic. Don’t put the hot water in a plastic bowl, don’t wrap yourself in a plastic cloak. Plastics contain numerous compounds that shouldn’t be in your body. Heat and steam tend to make it easier for those compounds to break apart and its better not to risk exposing yourself, especially if you’re steaming for fertility. It’s the same reason you shouldn’t microwave food in plastic.
Use good clean water A lot of tap water does contain trace amounts of VOCs, these are the compounds in paint, and they aerosolize easily so they can come up with the steam. Use filtered water when possible.
Changes to expect after Yoni Steaming
Various changes may follow after Yoni Steaming, from healing and physical releases to blissful relaxation. Things you might see include changes in your menstrual cycle, release of dark blood and clots, a lighter cycle and increased awareness of your feminine body. If there has been stagnancy or menstrual imbalances, you may expect there to be some significant changes or dark syrupy blood releasing with your next moon-time. For others the changes may come more slowly and be much more subtle.
During and after your steam you might feel tired or emotional, and it’s important you take the time to rest and stay warm after your Yoni Steam.
What are the safety concerns?
The primary safety concern is that the steam could burn the sensitive vaginal tissues if it is too hot.
Adding extra moist heat to the vagina and exposing the vagina to certain additives within the steam could also increase a woman’s risk for yeast or bacterial infections.
If the vaginal steaming equipment is not kept clean, a person could also be at risk for infections and other side effects. Therefore, it is essential to clean all equipment thoroughly before using it.
If a person goes to a spa for a vaginal steaming, they should ask the spa staff how they clean their equipment and what steps they take to reduce infection risk.
Vaginal steaming can be dangerous if a woman is pregnant. This is because the vaginal steam could affect the growing fetus.
Avoid Yoni Steams if:
- You are pregnant or think you may be pregnant!
- You are currently bleeding.
- Have an active vaginal infection or open wounds. Use caution:
- If you have an IUD or another contraceptive device in place.
